About Selásskóli
Selásskóli began teaching in the fall of 1986. The school is a peripheral school at the top of Árbær. Children attend Selásskóli until age 12, then move to Árbæjarskóli, the district's consolidated school. The school has taken advantage of its proximity to the city's main natural pearls by integrating them into as many subjects as possible.
School history
The school was built in six phases, with the final phase completed in fall 2002. During the 2002-2003 school year, a competition was held to name the school's wings. Since the 2003-2004 school year, the school's wings have been named Norðurgarður, Suðurgarður, Vesturgarður, Austurgarður, Miðgarður, and Ásgarður. That same year, the school became single-session. Starting in fall 2003, all students have been able to get a hot meal for lunch. Since fall 2024, school meals have been free as part of a three-year pilot program.
Green Flag recipient
In 1998, the school established an environmental policy, which is continuously evolving. This work paid off in spring 2002 when the school received the Green Flag, an award from the Foundation for Environmental Education. The school received the flag for two years. The school renewed its application, which was approved. The Green Flag was awarded for another two years on June 1, 2004. In spring 2024, the school received the Green Flag for the eighth time.
Diverse teaching methods
Selásskóli aims to meet each student's diverse needs by offering varied teaching methods and learning materials. The school emphasizes collaboration among teachers and students through team teaching and group work. Educational assessment is personalized and designed to motivate students.
